Black streaks are colonies of Gloeocapsa magma, an airborne cyanobacteria. Shingle manufacturers use limestone as a filler in asphalt shingles, and the organism feeds on it. Spores travel by wind, birds, and insects, then settle and colonize, appearing first on north-facing slopes where shade keeps moisture on the surface longest.
